What tools do you use to monitor SQL Server (including express)?

New job, new company. There is no monitoring or maintenance done on any database servers. most are vendor apps so its seen as vendor work!I am writing a basic framework to do maintenance and inform me when backups are not taken after a period of time. This works fine everywhere except on sqlExpress where there is no agent, and mySQL which is a different beast altogether.Rather than have 3 bespoke frameworks to monitor the database instanaces in the company Im thinking a dedicated tool would be better.I have used Idera in the past in an all sql server environment, and it worked well, but didnt monitor backups (although i think i could add a custom sql query to be monitored).Im not massively worried about mySQL at the mo as it may be phased out, and there is not very much of it, but defo from SQL Server 2000 up to 2014 & across all versions (express to enterprise) I would like to find software to do the monitoring. In circumstances like this, where agent is not available, what tools have you guys used to monitor?
